Together We Can
Families today seem busier than ever and are often pulled in many directions - school, work, sports, music, clubs, care of parents, etc. With all of these demands on our time, it is often difficult to find time for volunteer work. Volunteers give of their time and expertise for the benefit of our youth.
What is YOUR perception of PTA? If you
automatically think of the cookies and punch ladies at open house or
room mothers, you haven't experience today's PTA! Sure, you can find
PTA moms and dads at open house and room parties, but you'll also find
them on curriculum or advisory committees striving to help children and
schools meet today's new discussing legislative matters with our
senators and representatives. Those same moms and dads may be on a
principal selection committee or sharing the parental perspective on a
Department of Education panel/committee. Today's PTA parent may often
times be at the computer researching and writing grants for
supplemental educational resources or on behalf of public school
funding. Some PTA parents may spend a lunch visit to share their
expertise in career planning. Others may record at school for story
time. You do not have to be a parent to be involved in a child's life,
as well as those who no longer have children in public schools.
At the recent National PTA convention in Baltimore, National PTA introduced their new tagline-- every child. one voice. Of course, this has always been the message of PTA, from our nation's capitol, to every statehouse, across rural America, to our cities -- PTA sounds a collective voice on behalf of ALL children.
Today's PTA has chosen three major priorities for the organization:
- Parent Involvement. Through the new Building Successful Partnerships program, PTA will continue the efforts to educate communities about the benefits of parent involvement. In the legislative arena, PTA advocates will continue to strengthen education law with appropriate parent involvement provisions.
- Safe and nurturing environments. Working to ensure that our schools and communities are safe and nurturing environments for our youth, PTA offers a violence prevention community action kit and website, a Critical TV Viewing program, as well as introducing a new Respecting Differences Resources Guide, available this summer.
- Support for public education. PTA believes that a strong public education system is vital to our nation's well being, and will continue to advocate for adequate public school funding. We offer a toll-free legislative information line (888-4ALL-KDS), a Washington Update web page ( www.pta.org ) and a weekly email newsletter through our member-to-member network.
Parental involvement, safe and nurturing environments, excellent public schools--- for ALL children.
So, how does today's PTA sound to you? There is a place for everyone-- parental involvement does not have to occur within the walls of a building. "Education is important enough for me to get involved!" Over 12,000 of your community members have made the choice to get involved and support PTA to help make a difference in children's lives in your school, your community, your state, and across our nation. You can too, just by calling PTA (317-357-5881).
As one of our new radio spots promise, "So, who works for your children? You do. And you'll never be doing it alone. Indiana PTA. Every child. One voice."
