Gavit Key Club/Students Collect Donations
Hammond, Ind. - The Gavit Middle/High School Key Club met last Thursday to discuss what they could do as a school to assist families displaced by Hurricane Katrina. They decided that families who are being re-located to Hammond will come first.
The students decided, with the help of the PTSA President Karen Holland and faculty member and club sponsor Eric Osorio, they would collect donations on behalf of any family who would be enrolling at Gavit. All donations collected between the kick off September 12th and the Homecoming Game on September 30th would first be offered to Gavit families. Any items not needed by Gavit families would be donated to area churches who are planning on going to Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana to work with the relief efforts.
The students will be collecting various items that may be needed by a family starting over. This would include non-perishable food items, clothing for all ages, toiletries, baby needs and school supplies. Not knowing how many families will be enrolled at Gavit, they will collect all donations with the idea that there will always be someone who can use the items.
In addition, the high school math and English classes will each have a collection bucket to collect change, and the middle school communities will have a penny-war to collect monetary donations. The students have decided that they will choose an organization who will match their funds to donate the cash to. Also, the Journalism Club is hoping to hold a garage sale to raise funds to be split between their year book expenses and Hurricane Katrina victims. The PTSA is discussing ways to congratulate the students on their efforts with an ice cream or pizza party.
The PTSA's annual Welcome Back Open House is scheduled for Thursday, September 15th at 6:00 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at the Open House or at the school office during regular office hours.
